The stage designs for the original production at the Paris Opera were created by

Philippe Chaperon
for Act 1 (Council Scene) and Act 2 (Dungeon Scene);
Charles-Antoine Cambon
and Joseph Thierry for Act 3 (Sea Scene and Shipwreck) and Act 4 (Hindu Temple);
Jean-Baptiste Lavastre
for scene 1 of Act 5 (Queen's Garden, not shown); and
Edouard Desplechin
for scene 2 of Act 5 (The Manchineel Tree). Engravings depicting the amazing sets appeared in periodicals throughout Europe. The final scene designed by Desplechin received special praise for its originality. Possibly because of advance publicity and high expectations, the Shipwreck Scene of act 3, executed by numerous stagehands, was deemed by the press to be somewhat disappointing. However,
Arthur Pougin
writing in 1885 identified the scene as the epitome of the company's grand opera

Rives married Sadie MacMurdo, with whom he had three children:

Over two years after her death Arch Communications Corp., won a construction permit for Hartford's channel 61 in September 1983; James Grasso was minority partner in Arch Communications. Arch Communications Corp. planned to memorialize Grasso by using the call letters "WETG" for channel 61, as Grasso's initials were ETG, however, Channel 61 came on the air September 17, 1984 as WTIC-TV, and was dedicated in Grasso's honor.
After the Civil War ended in 1865, Gist took an
oath of allegiance
in
Greenville, South Carolina
, and received a
pardon
from President
Andrew Johnson
. He returned to
Rose Hill Plantation
, which had survived the Civil War and
Sherman's March to the Sea
because the Broad River was in flood stages and the Union troops could not get through. Gist remained at Rose Hill and rented out the land to
sharecroppers
. He developed
appendicitis
and died on September 30, 1874. Gist is buried in the family plot near the mansion.
, soldier, and South Carolina state legislator. Dunovant was a native of Chester County, S.C. and a longtime resident of Edgefield County, S.C.
Vaux died on March 22, 1895 in Philadelphia, where he is buried in
Laurel Hill Cemetery
