Description
Here is something that you do not see listed on Ebay very often as they were produced in limited quantities. We have sold perhaps 3 or 4 thousand radios and receivers on Ebay, but this is only the fourth KIWA loop that we have offered for sale in nearly 17 years of specializing in communications receivers and shortwave radios. We usually get one of these in our hands every 4 or 5 years and have been fortunate to obtain a second one to offer this year.About 3 decades ago in the early 1990's, Craig at Kiwa Electronics designed and created these wonderful AM loop antennas. They are highly regarded by mediumwave (AM broadcast band) enthusiasts who like to DX for distant stations. The antenna is designed to bring several tools for the DXer to use to capture those distant or elusive AM broadcast signals.
The antenna is used, but in great condition overall showing only some minor signs of use. Electronically, we tested the antenna and it performs exceptionally well. However, the antenna is so sensitive, that if you do not have it in the proper location, you will hear lots of noise from your household lighting and appliances as this antenna acts like a vacuum cleaner for signals and amplifies both the good and the bad when sending them to your receiver. Indeed, we want to mention that owning this antenna does not guarantee good signal reception due to its sensitivity to RF noise common in many households. The antenna user manual mentions placing the antenna on a wooden stool to prevent the reaction of the antenna with metal.
This antenna is comprised of the loop core, the base, and the control unit. It comes with the 120 VAC to DC adaptor and a copy of the user manual. We are also including the coaxial cable patch cord. In addition, we have located reviews and promotional pieces regarding this antenna which will be included and most owners of these KIWA loop antennas have not seen most of these reviews and promotional pieces. Finally, we have placed the manual and some of these other documents on a CD that will be supplied to the new owner of this antenna for reading and reference.
We do want to mention that the original nylon bolt and thumb nut to attach the loop to the base were misplaced by the previous owner and we have utilized a proper size bolt and nut. When you tighten the nut to the bolt, you must do so carefully, to allow the antenna freedom to swivel on the base. There is a clear disc that goes between the loop and the base to enable free movement of the wooden parts as they swivel.
Much has been written over the years concerning this antenna and it is considered by many to be the antenna of choice to capture distant or sift through crowded mediumwave signals. The antenna is designed to both rotate and to tilt enabling it both capture the weakest of signals while nulling unwanted signals. According the the Kiwa Loop User Manual, this is a description of the loop antenna:
"The Kiwa Loop Antenna is a high performance air core loop antenna designed for MW reception. The antenna is designed with special features to improve reception under difficult conditions. These features include a fully balanced design to improve nulling ability and to provide noise immunity. A regeneration control adjusts the antenna's bandwidth, and a geared tilt control facilitates nulling signals. Its inherent narrow bandwidth is ideally suited for MW DXing."
Here are some of the specifications of this loop antenna:
Tuning range of 530 - 1700 khz
Continuous tuning using a main and fine tuning control
Regeneration: adjustable bandwidth control provides a 70-75% reduction in bandwidth from the minimum position
Attenuator - adjustable from full sensitivity to an off position
Compass mounted on top for directional bearing
Tilt declination controls and readings to help null signals
Preamplifier for DX signals or off for local signals
Two independent outputs so that the antenna can drive 2 receivers simultaneously
Powered by 14 VAC (adaptor) or 13.7 volts DC (if using a battery source)
Height of 17" - Width of 18" - Antenna Coil of 12.75"
The regeneration control is most interesting. As you increase regeneration to improve signal strength, the bandwidth becomes narrow. Thus, this control offers the dual benefit of improving weak signal strength while also offering a narrower bandwidth in crowded band conditions.
If you casually to AM radio stations, it is unlikely that you will need this antenna or realize its full value. However, if you yearn to hear stations that may have been invisible to your receiver or stations that have been blocked by stronger nearer signals, then this Kiwa Loop will be an invaluable tool. The Kiwa Loop Antenna is manufactured using high quality materials and it would appear that no corners were cut to establish this antenna as a premium receiving device. We could offer some personal information with regards to using this antenna, but people more qualified have tested and already written much about its application and use. It is much better if you have the interest for you to take the time and read this material, yourself. Here are some links to assist you:

Jay Allen compares two AM DX antennas and this was done years ago. Neither antenna is available to purchase as new and the selling price of each antenna has risen to recognize demand and unavailability.
