502nd Parachute Infantry Regiment – 502nd PIR
502nd Parachute Infantry Regiment (502nd PIR), is an airborne infantry regiment of the United States Army. The regiment was established shortly after the American entry into World War II, and was assigned as a regiment of the 101st Airborne Division, "The Screaming Eagles", one of the most decorated formations of the U.S. Army.
The regiment saw substantial action in the European Theater of World War II and was deactivated in 1945, shortly after the end of the war. Reactivating in a new form in 1956, the 502nd Infantry served in the Vietnam War.
In April 1965 the 1st Brigade was deployed to Vietnam to relieve the 173rd Airborne Brigade. Instead as the war expanded, both units stayed. 2nd Battalion 502nd quickly made a name for itself under the command of the flamboyant LTC Hank "The Gunfighter" Emerson.
June 1966 - Operation Hawthorne
In 1967 - Operation EAGLE THRUST
The 502nd (as part of the 101st Airborne Division since 1968) saw action from the Mekong River delta in the south to the DMZ up north, they earned 27 campaign streamers, six American, and eight Vietnamese unit citations between them, including two Presidential Unit Citations earned by 2nd Battalion for An Khe and Dak To.
The 502nd fought in the A Shau Valley and the Rescue of Dustoff 65.

st
Airborne Division (Airmobile)
The Screaming Eagles
The first element of the 101
st
Airborne, the 1
st
Brigade arrived in Vietnam in July 1965.
They later arrived in Vietnam as a full Division, out of Fort Campbell under the command of Major General Olinto M. Barsanti on the 19
th
of November 1967.
The 101
st
Airborne Division was to remain in Vietnam until the 10
th
of March 1972.
Operating from Phan Rang and throughout CTZ III the 101
st
were to deploy to CTZ I and Quang Tri Province and Thua Thien Province during the Tet Offensive of 1968.
The 101
st
were heavily involved in the Battle of Hue / Battle of Hue Citadel.
By 1969 the US Military had decided that full scale Paratrooper assault were unlikely to be used in Vietnam and by July 1969 the 101
st
Airborne were fully Airmobile (Helicopter insertion).
This is an interesting period for the 101
st
Airborne – Not all operatives Airborne Qualified, only those that are airborne qualified are entitled to use the ‘Airborne’ tab above the Screaming Eagle.
Battles at Dak To, Phong Dien, a HQ at Hue / Phu bai, Operations Texas Star and the last major US Offensive of the war (inside Vietnam), Operation Jefferson Glenn (September 1970 – October 1971) were to follow.
The 101
st
Airborne were then involved in the US / ARVN Invasion of Laos in (December 1971 – January 1972) – Operation Lam Son 719.
The 101
st
